Hi i have a 9gallon(40l) aquarium im setting up and wondered what i should do:

what would be better to do:

1 male betta
or
2-3 female bettas

and would tank mates could i keep with them

i would like a bottom feeder like pygmy corys or ottos

and if keeping male betta would like something like harlequin rasboras

thanks for all your opinions!!

1 male betta would be better in a tank that size with pygmy cory's or otto's but that depends on the nature of the male, some will tolerate tank mates others won't.

If you wanted females then minimum recommendation would 5/6 to difuse any aggression and not sure a 9 gallon would be big enough for all of them.

Fast fin nippers are not good with long finned betta's but a shorter HM/PK type may be OK, but once again depends on your betta's temprement.

They are as unpredictable as humans with just as many mood swings

Try it and see but keep an eye on them for about a week, he may tolerate it.

Personally I never keep any other fish apart for catfish in my betta tanks and that is only in the girls tank. The males don't have anything in theirs apart from plants or pygmy cory's. So there is nothing on the same swimming waterlevel as them.
