Male Betta Ill - I Think?

my red male betta, has a black edge on his tale which looked as if it was spreading a little bit. I assumed this was fin rot and have chemicaly treated it. Now i fear this is just a colour change. Can anyone clear this up.

Also he has what looks like a swollen gill, what is it?

I was going to use him to breed but its not looknig very good for him!
