Male Betta Attacked

I read on here a good while back that it was the most humane way, and least traumatic for oneself is to freeze the fish - as pneumonia is painless. I'm sure killing the fish any way at all isn't the nicest possible thing to do for us or them, but I kinda wish I had put him in the freezer as when I eventually noticed him suffering I was far too late to rescue him. After 2 hours of being in the vase he died. I'd been agitating the water every 5 minutes while he was in there as it encourage him to go to the surface for air. I did everything I could to keep him alive but I could have lessened his suffering by freezing him much sooner.
