I have a male betta in a 75 gallon community tank, and I got to thinking that maybe I'd put a female in with him to spice things up. But obviously I don't want the two of them to rip each other to pieces, and I've read that that can sometimes be the case. What do you think?

Don't put in one, she may be able to get away from him and hide in your big tank but she will be stressed out. 3 or 4 females for evry male you have. Careful, Bettas are not community fish, chances are the females wont be the victims but your other community fish will be.

IMO I wouldnt put any females with him. If you put 1 female she wont be happy and chances are he will kill her, but again if you put more females chances are they will kill him :good: :good:

Agree totally with Nat....you should never keep females (any amount) with males. You will end up with seriously injured or worse still dead fish :good:

Just as I suspected... so much for love :(

Nittany has been thriving in my community tank for some time. He is BEAUILFUL! Navy blue with white tips (Hence the name... Go Penn State!!), and I thought he would make interesting offspring. But breeding sounds a bit too involved if they can't just get along in a tank together. Thanks for the advice!

Why not put the male in a tank of his own and a few females in the 75g, that is such a nice big tank they would live well together

Oh I'm afraid the tank just wouldn't be the same without good ol' Nittany keeping everyone in line... even my big Parrot Cichlid! He doesn't attack... just likes to keep everyone in their place. He's the fish equivalent of a herding dog lol. But thanks for the suggestion.
