Hi, I'm moving all my tanks and fish around. I will have a 6 inch Frontosa in a 60 US gallon bowfront and am wondering what suitable tankmates would be. My smaller Tangs are all going into a different tank and I want somthing different and colorful. I read that you can keep lesser aggressive Malawi with a Front, but don't know which ones are less aggressive. My Frontosa is very docile. What Malawi's (or anything else you can think of) may work ? Thanks !

I have these Haps in with my Mbuna, they are all docile and would probably make for a nice tank

Nimbochromis venustus
Nimbochromis livingstonii
Cyrtocara moori

What about some Synodontis multipunctatus in there?

I love them ! Especially the Venustus....but get too big. I know already eventually the Frontosa will be too big for the tank. The Cyrtocara moori is a good idea, as it grows slowly like the Front. Yes, I plan to add some Synodontis.

I would like to put the Front in my 125 gallon with my Severum and Tinfoils as I have plenty of room, but not sure how that will work out. The Front is just a bit skiddish and the Tinfoils are boisterous.

If that DID work.....I would be open to anything in this particular tank. Hmmmmmmmmmm

Yeah sorry didn't read the 60 Gallon bit. Main problem that I can see in attempting a mix of the Front and the South Americans is the water parameters. Someone is not going to be happy in there I know people do it with mixing more docile members of African and South American groups but can't see that they will thrive together.

Someone needs to have a word with these fish and sort it out I want to mix marines, community and cichlids in a reef, with crabs and shrimp and I want it in cold water straight from the tap. Oh and I don't want any algae. If fry are born in the tank I would like them to grow to 2 inches then swim to the top of the tank and arrange themselves into groups so I can scoop them out and take them straight to the shop without having to empty my tank...............now is this really too much to ask?

Yeah, I wish it was that easy !
I have Regani fry in a 24 inch tall tank. It took me 40 minutes to catch just 4 of them ! The pair are now moving to a 29 gallon.

No, I'm not going to put the Front with the Severum. I know he wouldn't like it.

I feel your pain!!

My 100g mixed Malawi tank has a depressingly efficient breeding pair of Cynotolapia Red top Afra, I never wanted to raise babies and despite putting 5 Synos, and the 3 Haps in there the fry still find places to hide and thrive. Although my LFS do buy them from me and currently have £60 in credit towards a marine set up (also maybe slightly wrong but I did use some credit to buy the Livinstonii who in turn eats some of them), I do groan when I suddenly see a gang of inch long babies in there. Takes me 20 minutes just to get enough rock out the tank to start chasing them. Tank was only set up last September and have had 70 babies out already!

i have a frontosa in with my aulonocara, cyrtocara moori and other haps and all is well i even manage to keep pictus cats and my beloved L200 green phantom plec in with them and no issues. the beauty of it is most haps are quite peacful i would definatly stay away from the nimbochromis species i.e venustus and polystigma they will seem nice and peacful until they get 4" plus them they will become narky little swimes other haps would be: cyrtocara moori, protmelas stevani (taiwan reef) , scianochromis fryeri, placidochromis electra and aulonocaras. :) hope this helps

I ended up keeping the Frontosa with the other Tangs in the tank I was gonna sell. Found room for it in the dining room and now we can only use 3 chairs at the table.
