hi guys, im currently setting up the above, but rocks are so so expensive, ive heard u can just goto a builders yard etc and get them cheap! which kind shall i look for? im a bit worried thinking ill kill my fish with any old rock

advice needed urgently

cheers

well i tryed to make something out off slate ( which i got for free, i just went to the slate place and got the broken and cracked pieces.), but it didnt work out so i brought some grantie blocks for $1.89 each and it looks pretty good in the tank

fortunately the types of rock you can use in a rift lake setting are more varied than those you can use in the typical comunity setting. The usual advice of avoiding calcerous rocks can be ignored, as the fish you want to keep like hard, alkaline water. I've seen such setups done using a back wall of tufa rock and a sand substrate, which looked quite stunning.

Just been browsing around some sites and I think you may find this very helpful

Examples of cichlid tanks

There are plenty of malawi setups on there and they give a comlpete breakdown of what they contain.
