Hello Everyone,

I am not exactly a beginner but I am not terribly experienced either.

I was gifted a fish tank from my school to use in my classroom. It was kept in a boiler room for a while. Who knows what might have splashed on or in. Unfortunately, the situation is complicated as I had filled out paperwork to be able to upgrade my classroom tank. It seem really rude to not use it and go out and get a new one.

Is there any way to clean this to the point where I know it is absolutely safe? It is nice and has really thick glass and is an older model?

I have heard distilled water and then perhaps salt and vinegar?

How can I humanely "test" it and make sure it's safe?

Glass isn't porous so just wash it out with lots of fresh water and make sure there isn't any film on the glass, and then it should be good to go. I would fill it and leave it standing for a couple of weeks and check for any film that may form on the water surface that could indicate oil or diesel etc.

Wipe out with a.microfibre cloth then rinse with fresh water
