Hi everyone, due to all the positive comments i got when i asked which sand to use im after bit more help!
Tank is 6'6"x2x2
I have 100kg of Ocean Rock, will be buying the Argonite sand.
I have a Eheim pro3 canister.
Aquamedic turboflotor 3000 protein skimmer.
A 4 stage RO unit, and im looking to buy a Aquamedic helix uv unit, as i want to minimise a whitespot outbreak! I am wanting to keep a few big fish, Angel, tangs, puffer and a trigger. No corals.
Basically i want to know how the set up sounds to everyone, by what i have available to me.
Obviously i wont be able to afford to fill a 6 n half foot tank with live rock, so i was after some suggestions of how i could set up? What to put in the canister? Bio or mechanical filtration? What?
I did have enough undergravel filter plates to use in conjunction with this but after so many negative comments iv decided to knock that on the head.
Would also appreciate some comments from people who have a similar set up and equipment. Seems alot of people only have small tanks from what i have read.
Thanks guys :)

so, thats 680 litres

mmmmm, is there no way you could buy live rock for filtration - you would need approx 75 k at say £5 a kilo = £375

Ok, you having a dsb or shallow?

I have a Eheim pro3 canister.

you will have to be extra careful with your cleaning routine

A 4 stage RO unit,

Check out ROman, be wary of buying second hand - you will often have to change all the media and filters which ends up costing the same as buying new!

Keep for emergencies, doesn't need to be run all the time

My only suggestion would be save up for the live rock

Good

Many of us have larger tanks but I can't think of anyone on here that does not run with live rock
Thanks guys :)

Is 75kg enough? Can it be used with the ocean rock as i have lot of it?! Quite hard to find ANYONE in Teesside area selling as much as id need at the right price.

Just normal couple of inch, not deep sand bed no

RO unit is Brand spanking new :hey:

I thought you could keep UV on al time to keep the water clear? -_-

Not needed, but some people do

Ocean rock does not really provide much filtration as it is not porous enough.

You would be better to use what is called reef bones, this used to be live rock, some other rocks can be used mainly those of volcanic type origin I believe. I will check on that and get back to you.

You could then use a half and half of RB to LR. With only one canister filter on a tank that size, you are going to need the extra filtration provided by live rock.

You can use some live rock rubble along with carbon and possibly phosphate remover if you are getting algae. The canister will become a cryptic zone containg all sorts of sponges and filter feeders that will aid your filtration. Most people will add some filter floss if using a canister but this is recommended to be competely changed once weekly.

With the type of fish and their bioload that you are looking at, you really need good filtration, LR will perform most of this for you if you then combine with the canister.

Your fish stock would need to be built up very gradually if only using half and half to allow bacteria colonies to form within the dead rock and catch up the need from the stock you have.

Have a think and a look around, better to plan and set up correctly now than to steam ahead and bump into problems.
