just got a new tank about a month ago now. I had 5 neons and a male guppy in the tank (40G). Went away last week on holiday and while away my mum thought she would buy me a fish for when I got back, she bought it on Monday so it was settled for me getting back today. It was a Male Siamese Fighter, the guy at the LFS store (pets at home) told her it would be fine in the tank aslong as its the only male fighter in the tank and she told him the fish I had and he said it would be fine. However the fish slowly started dieing or disapearing, first the guppy then 2 neons then the rest have disapered (think it ate it). I no for sure its due to the fighter and I foned a good store that only does fish and the guy aggrees with me but I just wanted to ask here if this is why.

Sorry for the long post thanks. I'm going in 2moro for more fish so if anyone has any suggestions on any good ones to get then feel free to recommend (I'm going to go to the guy who specialises in fish as he knows what hes talking about).

Sadly yes guppys and male betta's don't get along as the flowing fins of the guppys is competition to the betta, plus also yes they do tend to pic on neons as well, i would get the betta it's own tank,
Post in chat chat they will adivse you on fish, but you will have to post your water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

Thanks for that.

Sorry to be a pain though and a noob but I take it the male betta and male siamese fighter are the same fish?

I think your fighter probably ate the neons but suspect they were already dead.

How did you cycle this tank?

I've kept fighters & neons together for many years without problems when the tank is a fair size but wouldn't mix them in a small tank. It does depend on the Betta though - some will chase anything out of "their" space.

Bettas live well in communities if you choose the tankmates carefully. ( and don't listen to a shop trying to sell you fish)

Don't buy any new fish yet, instead go & see what types you fancy and come back & research them but do buy test kits. You need tests for ammonia, nitite, nitrate and it is cheaper to buy a multi test pack rather than the individual kits.
