The culprit turned out to be the pH of the tap water. It normally runs at about 8.2, on this occasion it had dropped to 7.
Not sure if it is relevant in this case but the pH on one of my tanks dropped hugely a while back. The culprit turned out to be the pH of the tap water. It normally runs at about 8.2, on this occasion it had dropped to 7. As the tank has a lot of bogwood in it it acidifies the water anyway, and it just made things worse. I know someone who used to ork in water treatment and he reckoned the water board had just added too much lime.
Might be worth checking the tap water on the offchance. I also got some Api pH adjuster which helped. However, my situation was a bit different to yours as I knew what the cause was.
Good luck.

Your in North Yorkshire and get an 8.2 ph with tap water, i keep African's so i wish my water had a ph of 8.2 !! Im in South Yorkshire and have a ph of 7![]()
Thinks - maybe we could swap water sources. I keep fish that like a slightly acid environment!![]()
