Hi All

I’m getting my 195 gal this weekend and will try to set it up the following weekend.
This also involves two other tanks.

This is going to get complicated.

My Jewel Tank (about 55 gal) houses my two Cat Sharks, one Toadfish, one Mono, one Archer and my GSP. They will be transferred to the new tank (Filter will be a Fluval FX5)

The plan is to use all the water and filter media from my Jewel Tank (the filter is an Eheim Prof 2 external). This still means a very big water change.

At the same time I want to keep the Jewel Tank running topping this one up with the water of the 15 gal tank and the internal filter media from the 55gal & 15 gal. Again a big water change. I will need this tank running for my two chromides, knight gobies & my figure eight puffer.

Will this work or are the water changes to big?
How would you go about it keeping in mind that I need two tanks running at the same time. Any Suggestions?

Thanks
Sabby

Hi Sabby,

Firstly, I would not suggest switching the water from the 55 gallon brackish tank to the 195. The actual water contains very little beneficial bacteria, it is really a bigger pain than what it is worth, trust me. Not to mention it does hardly anything, (if anything) to help. Fill the 195 up with new water. When the SG, and more importantly the temperature is equal in the 55 as to the 195, make the switch from the media from the eheim to the fluval. Then the fish can be added directly afterwards. The transfer should go fairly smoothly. Monitor your water chemistry closely during the first week or two.

About the 15 gallon now. Again, switching the water from the 15 to the 55 will do basically nothing, the filter media is much more important. You can keep all the water from the 55 in the tank before switching the chromides, puffer, and knight gobies to it. Set the 55 gallon's SG and temperature to match the 15 gallon's, then you can add the media from the 15 gallon. The fish can then be added after the filter media has been switched. Again, monitor your chemistry closely during the first week or two.

Hey Sabby,

As if the PM's ain't been enough I'm now replying to your threads!

I did a similar sort of move 4 or 5 month ago. I was upgrading from 55 litre to 180 litre but wasn't increasing the fish stock straight away. I did a similar thing to what AMS is suggesting. Filled the new tank, set it running, equalised temperature and transferred the fish and media in one go. As long as the water is treated then the bacteria won't get destroyed and should multiply in the larger filer media that you will have.

The only thing I did diferently was to add a small amount of water from original tank but can't see how it helped that much.

I am replying to this despite knowing your situation with the tank Sabby :/

Hope it gets sorted soon.
