We have recently started our tank over again, giving away the previous fish, emptying it totally, cleaning everything, replacing the gravel with sand and starting a fishless cycle. Or so we thought...
Yesterday while looking at the tank, my boyfriend spotted a fish! It's a tiny fry, and it's definitely a fish because it looks like one! We were pretty shocked as we had cleaned everything, put new water in and had been adding ammonia to cycle the tank. Somehow this little guy had survived all that, and he's still swimming around now!
A few weeks before we gave our fish away, we think our Danios spawned as we saw a lone fry swimming aorund in there one evening. He was gone the next day so we think he must have been eaten, as all the other eggs must have. Maybe they spawned again just before we gave them away? It seems impossible for any eggs left behind to have survived because we cleaned all our plants and rocks etc off thoroughly before we put them back, and they were out for a good few hours.
We are wondering if anyone else has heard of eggs being able to survive a total tank overhaul, because that appears to be what has happened here.
