Hi - I've just bought online a Magi-200 internal filter with spray bar, for a 1-2ft tank. Thought it was a bargain price at £5.99, plus a free spare filter sponge (which I can put in when I remove the carbon sponge), a free 3" net and a free glass thermometer! All brand new! :D

Anyway, I was thinking of using it as a back-up filter in one of my 2ft tanks.

Has anyone ever used this brand of filter? Was it any good?

It has "activated carbon" sponge in there, as well as the normal filter sponge - would you say I should let the carbon sponge remain in the unit for a week or so before removing it or take it out before I put it in the tank?

I mean, this is not a new tank set up - there is already a matured filter running the tank - I just wanted to get a back up filter going somewhere in case any of my filters ever break down.

Regards - Athena

Hi Athena

I have one of the larger models (magi-700 i think) which i originally used on a 240L tank alongside a fluval 4+ and is now in storage as a backup.
I was very impressed with the filter and found it needed less cleaning than the fluval

tbh i would take the carbon out now and save it for a time when it maybe required.
In mine i ended up removing the pads altogether and filling the container with ceramic media

Thanks for the advice, Davo - and sorry for my delay in responding (been busy over weekend).

I will do as you say and take out the carbon filter. Yes, I can see it would be handy to have that for a time when I need to remove medications from a tank. Sometimes I can't see the obvious even though it's staring me in the face LOL!

Hopefully I'll receive it in the next day or two.

Cheers - Athena
