ok, so i was doing further theorectical stocking and i found Geophagus sp. "Tapajós - Orange Head". Long story short: i want, i want! but i'm not certain how feasible that would be...

--anyone ever seen these in an LFS or available online?
--would one do ok in a 4x1x2 tank?
--would it beat up my L200 plecs (under 6")?
--anyone ever owned one?
--can anyone suggest any tankmates?

PS:
THIS is something worth buying a 200 gallon tank for!! why, why do they bother with hybrids when Geophagus altifrons simply exist?!?

Those are some gorgeous fish!!
I think your best bet on finding one would be asking around on Aquabid... seeing if any sellers with other species of geophagus might carry it or know someone who does.

:p already looked.

i'm really just spec-ing out for when i graduate and have to move anyways. i figure that if i start planning now, i might actually be able to put together a gorgeous tank later!

why not post in the Cichlid-forum trading post?
and any other aquatic forum's trading post
theirs bound to be a Geo. keeper there :p

oh and btw, i still stick with my mini earth eaters;
Mikrogeophagus altispinosus - Bolivian Ram
Mikrogeophagus ramirezi - Blue Ram
:p
EDIT:
Forgot to add, i kept Geo. brasiliensis only a few weeks ago and he was pretty happy with slow moving cichlids like the severum
on another forum i frequent, a member there has geophagus surinamensis & redhead tapajos in a planted tank. here's pics

EDIT2:different person, 75g G surinamensis & S. jurupari tank

I hope this gives you an insight into the type of tanks Earth Eaters like

:hyper: i'm thinking about taking the plunge... i came into some "splurge" money and i'm thinking about getting a pair of the Tapajos

please!! any advice on Geo-keeping would be more than welcome!

So, you're hooked on them?

I keep a surinam geo and a Brasiliensis and both are great fish. (Surinams end up looking a bit like the altifrons you have linked)

Have you seen this? :)
It may not be the geo you want, but the information can be used generally on most geophagus species ;)

Am I wrong to say that Geophagus are truly the good guys of large south American cichlids? I've never owned one, but they seem like really good aquarium fishes.

PS. - anyone ever tried a cichlasoma species with a geophagus?? wonder how that would work out.
