My lyretail is very heavily pregnant and the skin/scales seem uncompfertably streched accross her tummy, this is my first swordie birthing and if any one more experienced in these things could hazard a guess from the included pics that would help. Shes the sole occupent in a 8.5 gallon birthing tank at the momment.

wow, she certainly is huge! Shes definately going to have a large batch of fry... maybe give her a shelled pea.

wow she's lovely ! Hope she "pops" (her babies!) soon B)

She is beautiful  Swordies will give birth at the most inconvenient time for you, like when you don't have time to catch the fry or don't have time to make room for the fry. We shall serve swordtails....REMEMBER THAT! :p

Just when you think she can't get any bigger she will.....then she will have fry!!

Good luck with the babies

Angry_Platy has it right! She'll have them at her convenience! :p Mine always wait until I've gone to work, they absolutely refuse to let me see them give birth. (It's a swordy thing. :D )

I have one that looks like her twin sister. She gets enormous before she drops, it shouldn't be much longer.

Tokis - not sure exactly, also it doesnt help that swordtail girls arnt quite a clockwork as guppies (4-6 weeks as oppossed to about 28 days)

Jen21 - she's far from neding a shelled pea, as she is often pooing

Angry platy & Polardbear - I have the next few days at home so should be much problem there.

She is starting to do less around the tank though so hopfully it will be soon

I was just going to say swordtails pregnancys can last up to 2months+ so its not suprising she's taking a while, feeding her lots of high protein foods will help aid her give birth and recover better and also doing lots of small water changes and offering well planted areas of the tank to give birth in will help encourage her.

Thats great!!

I hope you are prepared to keep every hour of the next week or so free.....she will give birth when you are asleep. or in the shower, or basically, away from the tank.

It is so rewarding though. My swordy babies (all 2 of them) are SOOOO active now. They have started chasing the 3 week old guppy fry around the trap instead of the other way around

It usually takes about one month for them too have the fry!

I wish you all the best with the fry!
