Hi...any thoughts about lunar lights for freshwater tanks? I know they are used mostly for saltwater reefs/tanks, but, any negative effects for FW ones? Do they provide any benefits besides looking cool at night and being able to observe nocturnals? Thanks. Frank

I dont think it would hurt. I will add a natural day/night cycle to your tank. One of the main reasons besides the realistic look, saltwater enthusiasts use lunar lighting is certain fish will not spawn without it. Clownfish for one. I think it looks fine in freshwater

2 of my tanks have moonlights in them. I think they look great :D If you do a search in the member picture section I'm sure you'll find some photos of tanks with them in as I can't post one on here.

I just bought a compact fluorescent fixture that has 2 lunar lights built in, and I love it.

The only benefit I can think of is if you wanted to simulate a natural 24 hour light cycle.

They sure look cool, though!

cometcattle - curious to know where you found yours and what brand/mfg? Was it very expensive?
I have bought the 30" for my 29g here:

But I just found it cheaper here: :sly:

The only other place I looked was Big Als, but I wasn't impressed buy anything they had. I ended up ordering the glass cover and a bunch of ferts because they had good prices on that stuff (drfostersmith).

I still need to replace the Actinic bulb because it won't help my plants.

Sorry for hi-jacking. :*)

Go for it!!

I use a Arcadia Marine Blue on my 5ft tank as they don't make a Blue moon that big.

I also use a marine blue for my 4ft but as the light units are twin I'ved got a Original tropical paired up with that.

Hi..thanks for all the replies. Thanks for the links Cattle. Coralife makes a compact 96 watt 6700 FW light but lunar lights have to be added/clipped onto the canopy. If anyone knows of a similar light that has it built in, let me know. Thanks again. Frank
