Lowering Gh

Does anyone have any inputs on lowering Gh levels. The water quality here in my area is really, really, did I mention really crappy. Other than having to buy expensive equipment such as water softeners, reverse osmosis setups, or the at home water services such as Music Mountain, how can I get it to a reasonable level? Just took a sample out of the tap and got 18 degrees.

Edit: just to mention, my own is 19 degrees and I keep a range of happy community fish.

Right now in my tank its about 17 and haven't had any probs. But I wasn't sure what kind of effect it might have on fish that are more suited to lower levels.
