My poor fishies. Can someone help? Since this topic...

http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=170620

...the other Platy died too. Symptoms included darting around, hanging around near the top of the tanklooking like he was eating at the surface, not gasping? And not eating when I fed them. Then... I had 2 Neon Tetra deaths following that. They seemed to get sunken bellies after the Platies came in, then it seemed to get better. With the first Neon death - I didn't spot any other symptoms, and the second - had swimbladder like crazy near the top of the tank (first I'd seen of it), and died very suddenly. It was horrible. All the fish died in a very short space of time after I got the Platies (that's four deaths in total).

So now I have 3 poor Neon Tetra, and one of them has dropsy like symptoms, not eating. A droopy belly but with a bit that sort of goes in in the middle. I'll insert pics though they're not very good. The other two have no visible symptoms.

I've wanted to treat but even scouring the net just can't seem to figure out what's wrong with my fish! There seem to be so many different and specific things it can be. Help?

Stats: PH 7.25, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 20, Ammonia 0. 30L tank. Water is now completely clear, since that last post.

Just checked the neon outs and dosn't look like they have ntd thank god.
But being very thin can be internal parasites to fish tb.
Whats it look like when the fish go to the toilet.
Darting around can be many things but more concerned about them being thin if there still eating.
Any signs of flicking and rubbing on objects as flukes can cause them to go thin.
Just want to check does the belly on the neons look lumpy.

The sunken bellies don't seem to be apparent any more. I've not really seen the fish go to the loo? No flicking and rubbing, but yes, the one Neon's belly is definitely lumpy!

Any neons left the group and spend most of there time hiding away on there own, also are they very active at night.

There that much going off in your tank finding it hard to pin point it.
You have a serious desease in your tank, and if the neons died of sunken in bellys when eating you are dealing with internal parasites to fish tb.
Best thing to do is check the anus of the fish to see if its enlarged or red and inflamed, and what does it look like when they go to the toilet.

For now make a list of symtoms on the fish that are left.
Then make a list of the fish that died, need to look at there symtoms too.

Just want to ask a last question, did the neons look bleached out before they died.

To sum up.
Everything was hunky dory apart from the algae bloom before the platy went in?

As soon as the platy go in fish start to die. Water is looking fine and the algae bloom has now gone.

Fish darting around the tank and then gasping at surface and then off balanced swimming then death.

I take it the fish in the shop when you stood watching them were fine? No sign of distress on any fish while you were watching?

If you could look behind the gill covers of a fish while its swimming around to see the colour that would help. Its hard to see in little fish but you should be able to see the gill colour underneath and check that its a healthy cherry red colour.
As Wilder has said, the tank isnt really big enough for the fish to swim in. Where in the house is the tank and is it exposed to strong smells, such as perfume, polish, air fresheners etc?
It has a lid? Does it have an air pump?

Did you do a water change before testing the water or is it the same water the fish died in?
Which filter are you using and how often and how do you clean it?
Tank maintenance. How often and how much are you water changing and doing gravel vacs? Are you dechlorinating the water?

The platys may have brought something nasty in with them. If it were a parasite then you should see a fish scratching off a plant or the gravel.
If they have brought in something internal like sporozoan parasites then that may explain the lumpiness in the tetras, but tetras are prone to cancerous lumps anyway.
How many neons have lumps that you can see?

Sorry for the questions, must feel like you are being interrogated by the fish police :look:

Can't see any problem with the anus of the fish, and as I said I haven't really seen them going to the toilet? :( No bleached out looking fish.

Remaining fish (Tetras) - Two seem normal, I think they seemed to have sunken bellies previously (back when I first got the Platies), but don't any more. One has a droopy lumpyish belly, doesn't eat and stays in the shadows more.

Dead fish: Platy 1 - no apparent symptoms. Platy 2 - darting around, not eating, hanging around the top of the tank a lot.

Tetra 1 - no apparent symptoms. Tetra 2 - Just really bad swimbladder that presented itself one morning, then the fish died quickly.

Its pointing towards ntd but strange as usually they start to look bleached out, when mine had it it got a sunken in belly, or they get dropsy and popeye, there many symtoms to ntd once it has advanced.
Check the gills to see if there red and inflamed. if i'm getting this right two of the neons already had the sunken in bellys, then the platys died.

I think for now I would try a bacterial med as there nothing to lose.
