I haven't lost a fish in this tank for longer than I can remember... the group of 5 were all adults, but not really old, as they came here as 1/2 inch long babies, around 3 years ago... everyone else looks good... this is 3 of the remaining 4 clowning around on the front glass

all 4 visible here, along with a flying fox, and my gourami... I saw a few more baby cherry shrimp out this morning, maybe the dead one choked, trying to eat one???

Well, this is a normal part of the hobby. No matter what we do, Fish will die. Could be cancer, something similar or bad luck in the tank. Who knows.

Normal life span of a Panda Garra is 4-6 years. The dead Panda was not of the age of 3 years as they have to be kept long enough by the seller to be of a size that can make it. It is possible that the one that died did so just from age. It was not far below the average of 4-6 years. When you look at life spans it is just a rough estimate and there will be some that die sooner and some that last longer than the estimated life span.

I doubt that you did anything wrong... It is just genetics. Just like with humans some live longer and some less. Same thing with fish.

I had the exact same thing happen to me quite recently. Bought 4+3 panda garras in 01 and then 09 of 2023. And suddenly this march I found one of the garras stuck between two rocks dead. The rocks have been there the whole time, the garras wedge themselves everywhere and one of them suddenly didnt make it.
No idea what happened
BTW anecdotally I recently added black venezuelan corydoras, and they look very similar to the garras so they school with them and the garras rest with them, but not similar enough to trigger competition. Is kind of cute

the 3 amigos... so I'm almost positive I saw all 5 panda garras this morning... the previous dead fish must have been one of the undescribed lizard hillstream's??? a lot of fish variety and cover in this aquarium...

also saw several cherry shrimp, both small and large this morning... kind of surprised the Denison barbs aren't more hunters of the shrimp...
