Just a note, I have searched, and studied for a couple of days, and tried to find info on Natural Zebra Danio breeding. I.E. What do they do if you leave them alone? Found nothing. If I want to breed, I can seperate a pregnant Danio, marbles in a tank....but what do they do when they do it for themselves?
The reason I was asking...my Danio was obviously egg bound....I have 4 wonderfull fish, I just adore em! 2 girls and 2 smaller slightly gold boys, so when I get up 2 days ago and I have only 3...my wee heart is thumping. I searched my tank from the outside for a couple of hours, returning, searching again, watching the other 3 they were popping in and out of a space between 2 rocks, I used mirrors...could see nothing. I worried that maybe she was dying...the other 3 gave up playing around the rocks and today I gave up worrying and decided to move that darn rock.
She was curled up in the gravel, then startled, swam away. Now she is happily playing with the others again.
So does anyone know...and yes she is slimmer.....was she sitting on a 'nest'. So next time this happens...I will leave her alone?
Not wanting to breed by the way, but just wanted to know really!

Danios are egg scatterers. Typically the female will swim around dropping eggs and thge male (or males) follow along behind and fertilise them. In a community tank once they have finished they will most likely turn around and eat all the eggs.

If she is swimming ok now I would say it is likely that she got herself stuck and couldnt get herself out. Danios are very pretty fish but they aren't the most intligent of critters and I have heard of them getting themselves stuck in all sorts of places (they seem to love trying to swim through holes that are too small for them).

totally agree, she was probably just stuck

Thanks for your replies, she is 100%, so whatever the wee devil did, she has not suffered any for her mishap! Next time...I will begin the rock moving earlier!

Yeah when we kept danios, at the time we had large gravel on the bottom and they would get themselves stuck in the holes in between the gravel. Just about gave me a heartattack one day when I finally spotted a little tail sticking up out of the gravel, but the danio was fine :p

As for breeding them, they'll do it on their own.
I never did anything special with mine and they were fine. As I said though, our gravel at the time was large, so the eggs when the female scattered them would get out of their reach so there was a better chance for the fry to not get eaten.
