I was taking pictures this afternoon of the tank that I just changed the sand in two days ago. I realized that I was missing a fish. I probed the tank to no avail and then started looking on the floor. He was under the back of the stand (black iron stand), dried up but still with his color. I know he was in there this morning when I fed them. The only place he could have gotten out was a spot on the back where the HOB filter goes in. It is about 3/4" wide and 6" long. I believe this may be the same one that jumped out last week when I had the lid open to do some maintanence. He also was swimming wildly around the top one other day last week. Other than those times, he appeared to be perfectly normal. I don't know what prompted the strange behavior that eventually let to him finding the floor.

some fish are jumpers.

We have a female golden wonder panchax that tries to jump out anytime the lid is open more than 2 minutes

we scooped her off the floor friday night. she's ok now.

We've also had 2 of those jump out while we were gone. we moved them to a tank with a better lid though, and they haven't jumped out since

That's really odd... my serpaes have never really been jumpers, in fact, they rarely swim around the top of the tank. They'll almost always wait for food to sink, and are more interested in chasing each other around than jumping out of the tank. I'll be sure to keep an eye out when I do have the lid up though.

Until last week, mine had never done that either and I've had some of the serpaes since January with a couple more coming in June or July. It was strange.

I'm missing 4 neon tetra's, maybe they ran off with your Serpae?!?! :D I have no idea where mine could be, i've looked and looked, and i can't find them anywhere. My tank is "jump" free because of a past jumper, so that's not a worry this time.

I can remember before, a neon managed to jump into the plastic breeding filter at the top of the tank, and went through the grill so he was where the fry were supposed to be kept. I was amazed.
