Not sure what is going on here but I have lost a UD Catfish yesterday evening and a Bronze Cory was dead in the tank this morning. Both fish looked healthy enough but did act strangely now that I think with hindsight. The UD Catfsh was swimming around the surface a couple of hours prior to its death, usually, it is rarely seen away from the side of a piece of bogwood. The Cory was perched very still on top of a piece of rock yesterday for long periods.

I tested the water last night after the UD had died and the parameters were all normal (Ammonia = 0ppt, Nitrite = 0ppt, Nitrate = 80ppt, which resulted in a 10% water change). The only change was the implementation of another filter to the tank in additional to the existing cannister filter as I intend to filter peat. The "new" filter has semi-new bio media but I didn't think that would be a problem as the bio-media in the existing filter is old and that would seed the new?

All other fish seem fine and I have more delicate species like Rams in there. The two that died have been in the tank for around 2-3 years but I don't imagine that their lifespans are so short??

Ideas are appreciated.

Possibly an oxygen issue. How warm is the tank and does it have any aeration?

Tank temp is set to 25C

Hmmm .... it has crossed my mind but then dismissed as the Fluval 304 and 204 (have both running) draw air in?? Am I wrong?
The outflow for is also positioned just above the water surface so that it aggitates the surface to mix air in (sorry, the correct term to describe that escapes me!)

Perhaps I should place a pump in there tonight ...

My Fluval 305 doesn't seem to do much in the way of airation as without the air pump running I see hardly any sign of bubbles etc....

It is just a thought. Higher temps lead to lower oxygen in the water . I have lost cat fish to this

Thanks guys! I will put a pump in as a precaution.
If you have the filter outlets above the surface splashing in then an air pump is going to do very close to zero with regards to extra surface agitation. I wouldn't bother with the pump unless you want it for looks. Barring massive overstocking, I would say you can pretty safely eliminate lack of oxygen from the possible causes list.
