Okay. About a week ago, my betta fish developed a strange white spot on his side, about halfway between his head and his tail, on his body. It wasn't fuzzy and it didn't look like a speck of sand. It was a bit bigger than a scale. It was flat and shiny looking, and surrounding it, his skin/scales were slightly darkened, almost black, in a ring with fuzzy edges (not sudden; more like a bruise rather than a marking). I couldn't find any information about it so I didn't know what to do. A few days ago, the white thing fell off, and now there is a slight dimple where the white thing used to be. It looked a bit like a large scale. Looked to me like a droplet of wax attached to his side.

Now it's still a slight dimple which is a bit darkened from the rest of the body. But now, also, he has about 4 scales missing near his tail. They are not like the one on the side of his body exactly; they look very definedly like lost scales. They didn't start as white spots or anything. They just appeared yesterday, not looking unusual at all prior. They just look like black pits.

This is all on one side of his body. The other side looks normal. I haven't noticed any other symptoms. He's fairly active but doesn't seem to be scratching himself on anything, and he doesn't seem irritated, just playful and interested in his surroundings.

Does anyone know what this could be? I'd try to post pictures except my camera is broken and probably in many pieces now sitting in my parents' house while my dad tries to fix it. :hey: So no pics.

Here are my tank stats and such: I don't know any levels or pH because I don't have anything to test for those and they didn't have any at my local pet shop, so I figured they're probably fine. It's tap water with a dechlorinator added and a pinch of aquarium salt. He's in a bowl approximately 1 gallon with no tank mates. Has a plastic rock cave with plastic plants attached which aren't sharp, tank kept at approximately 80 degrees constant (ranges from 78 to 82 sometimes, one time went up to 84). I change a cup of water out every day, and full tank change around once every 5 days. Feeding him 2 pellets twice a day with an occasional snack mid-day of a pea or "red grubs" (what is that? it's marketed as betta food so I bought it)

White spots that devolope on a fish usually are grey to whitish spots that have a circling of red around them or red spot in the middle, was the bruise beneath the skin or on top, it sounds bacterial to me as though ulcers are going to appear, what are your stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

Hi, as I said earlier I don't know my water stats but I'll try to find out.

Okay, I got a testing kit. I don't know my ammonia, as it isn't included here, but I do frequent water changes so that shouldn't be an issue, right? Up until yesterday I was doing full water changes once every 5 days. I just got a new 3.5 gallon tank so I don't know yet, I'll see once it starts to get dirty..

Ahem... anyway... these are the approximate stats my test gave:

Nitrate: 30 ppm
Nitrite: 0 ppm
Total hardness: 250 ppm
Total alkalinity/buffering capacity: 300 ppm
pH: 8.4

I would try a bacterial med for now, as missing scales can be a numberof things.

I just got my camera to work a bit...

You can kind of see them there.

Missing scales can mean the fish have scraped them off on a object so make sure there are no ornaments with sharp ends, could be bacterial or parasite, any signs of flicking and rubbing against objects.
