 I don't think losing 11 fish in a month is normal! Since August I've lost: 3 guppies, 5 mollies and 3 platies. I really have no clue what's wrong! :-( I do a 25 % water change weekly, feed them 3 times a week and monitor every fish daily.

Symptoms before death were:
laying on the bottom
looking thin
and some just died suddenly

I treated the whole tank twice with Internal Parasite Clear and Melafix.

Ammonia - 0
Nitrates - 5.0
Nitrites - 0
pH - 7.0

Can anyone suggest anything that might solve this perplexing problem?

Those all like salt in their water though that shouldn't be causing them any problems.

Livebearers are supposed to be hardy fish... what size is the tank, what are the other inhabitants, etc? How long after you bought them did they die? If it was shortly afterwards maybe you have an unreliable LFS. Also how well aerated is your water? Even hardy fish don't do well in water that has little oxygen.

umm... i kno fish can go a couple of days with out food. but try feeding them more. i feed my fish twice a day(mourning and night)

here is my solutions...

1. female die after giving birth
2. males die by fighting..reason -> because of nothing to do once all the females die and no one for them to mate with..they get angry and fight..simple

this is MY solution.. -_-

:) Well, the tank is a 46 gallon and has an Aquaclear 300 and an air pump. The only fish that are in there are guppies, platies, mollies and ottos. I always make sure that there are more females in the tank than males, so there is no aggression. I got almost all of these fish from a fish breeder back in March. I don't know what else to do!

I personally find that livebearers from most of LFS not hardy. Either they are overbred to the point where their genes are extrememly weak, or the condition at LFS is bad. Even from the same LFS, other fishes do ok, but not platies (in my case)...

Usually males without the company of females won't fight... they will simply try to mate with each other. At least that my experience with livebearers.

Hi Sasha
I'm so sorry to hear of your losses :-(
The only thing I can think of to help you for the future is to
get a UV steraliser for your tank. They can be expensive but
worth the money if it saves just one life in the future.

:rip: all the little fishies
