I am very sad and guilty about this...Loretta passed away today- I tried to save her...and it's all because I bought those two Cories. The first Cory I brought home seemed healthy and active, but the second one I had bought didn't when I brought it home, and it passed away less than 24-hours later. My first Cory passed away during the night (found him glaze-eyed this morning), and then Loretta looked sick. So I then cleaned out the entire tank (kept the old filter in, but rinsed it), and then let it all cycle for about 20 minutes while I was in the shower (If I am using the word cycle properly- I let the conditoner and conditioning salt cycle). Before I left for the day, I found my little Loretta dead. Poor girl...I really adored her :-(

Awww, I'm so sorry :(

Reasons like this are why people say you need to have a quarantine tank. Never know what new fish are bringing with them. I don't use one and I just know one of these days, I'm going to regret that.

Yeah no kidding...they all just got sick so fast

OMG, I'm so sorry - you must be just devastated.
Perhaps someone will discuss what's meant by 'cycling' another time, when you're less upset.

I'm really sorry to hear that! It is always risky bringing home new fish.

That tank is probably best suited for 1 healthy betta. Really too bad that Loretta caught what that cory had. :(

It is certainly not your fault. These things can happen.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. :( Sometimes life experiences are tough, but you'll learn from it and be an even better pet parent. Good luck with your next baby!

so sorry to hear of your loss :(

but i do think some questions need to be asked here, i hope you dont mind but it may help you for next time
when you say you washed your tank out, what did you use? and also you say you rinsed your filter, did you do this in tap water? if so its very likely you killed off your 'good' bacteria in there. filter media should always be 'rinsed' in tank water (i know hard call when you think theres a disease or something in your tank)

did loretta show any signs of illness? what do you think cory2 died from?
also salt is not good for corydoras, and if this was in the water, it is likely to be what killed them, not an illness. they can tollerate very small amounts, but anything more than a small spoonful per 5 gallons can have dire consequences :(

let your tank cycle properely, im guessing from your statement "(If I am using the word cycle properly- I let the conditoner and conditioning salt cycle)" that you unfortunatly dont know what cycling really is, hang on a min and i'll find a link for you :) also as far as i know, you shouldnt really need to add any salt to your tank(for freshwater/tropicals), unless its for a disease like dropsy? i could be wrong (i know some people use it for stress but apart from that what else does it do?)

once your tank is fully cycled, try again, with another betta, and hopefully things will run better for you :)

found it - link to fishless cycling :) hope it helps

Omgod.

My heart actually sank when I read this. You've spoken so highly of loretta over the past few weeks. I'm gutted for you.
She was such a pretty betta.
=[

Thanks everyone...my tank is still empty, and it makes me sad to look at it. Gosh I felt so bad. It still breaks my heart, but I am looking into getting another fish or fishes soon. This time, I am gonna do it right; unfortunately, I had to learn the hard way. But then again, things like this happen...

when you say you washed your tank out, what did you use?

Nothing...just rinsed it out with very warm water.

and also you say you rinsed your filter, did you do this in tap water?

Yes I did...I didn't really know what to do since I was dealing with an illness/disease.

did loretta show any signs of illness? what do you think cory2 died from?

She just stayed at the bottom of the tank and wouldn't eat. She just wasn't her lively self...it all happend so fast though.

also as far as i know, you shouldnt really need to add any salt to your tank(for freshwater/tropicals), unless its for a disease like dropsy? i could be wrong (i know some people use it for stress but apart from that what else does it do?)

Yea some people on this forum recommend the conditioning salt for stress...

Thanks :)

Honestly I think the best thing you can do is get another betta. It really is better than looking at an empty tank and feeling sad about it.

I've been through the same thing on multiple occasions where it was my fault almost entirely (read divider failure), and getting a new betta really seems to make you forget about it all and be excited. :)
