After 1 week of setting up my tank and settling my tap water, I now have 4 Black Widow Tetras and 4 Silver-Tipped Tetras in my tank. My LFS tells me that both these fish are hardy but I am worried that the amount of chemicals I have to put into the tank are killing the fish. I am using Sera products.

Also, the Black Widow Tetras tend to swim (when they are not hiding in the plants) in their 4 and the Silver-Tipped Tetras seem to play chasing games around the tank in pairs and when they are not playing, they are hiding in the plants. Yesterday the S-T Tetras were shaking uncontrollably. Could this be because of the chemicals?

We only have the tank light on for approx. 6 hours a day after work and before bed (LFS recommended 6-8 hours). Does the light send them loopy. They seem to swim around when the light is off but if you was to turn the tank light on or approach the tank, they scarper.

Your fish are still adjusting to their surroundings. With more time they'll come around. Exactly what type of chemicals are you using?

All I've done so far is buy the tank and the stand, setup, washed and added the gravel, the filter was already fitted so LFS explained how to put the wool etc inside, fitted the pump and the heater. Turned all on and waited for a week. Then went back to my LFS and got the fish, plants, food and water treatment stuff.

The products I am using are:

Aquatan 1 capful initially and then only when changing water
Ammovec 1 capful daily
Nitrivec 1 capful daily
Morena 1 capful on Wednesdays and Saturdays
Acid Buffer 3/4 teaspoon daily both morning and evening
Vipan/Vipagram feed once a day (alternate between the 2 for better diet - apparently!)

Here is my understanding of what you have in there ...

Aquatan - water conditioner
Ammovec - same func as Nitrivec?
Nitrivec - prevents the enrichment of ammonia and nitrite (so helps cycling)
Morena - Water conditioner with natural peat extracts, trace elements for soft water fish....... why do you need this?
Acid buffer - why do you need this? What is the PH reading of your tap water?

As far as I can see Vipan is a flake and Vipagran is the same in granulated form.

I would recommend you add some veggies like peas, cucumber and live/frozen food like bloodworms, tubifex, etc. to improve their diet.

One of my black tetras has a small white spot eye level just past the head of the fish. Could this be disease? If so, what causes it, what is it and how can it be treated? :(
