Hey guys.

Christmas break is over, which brings in a new year, a new semester, and a chance to finally set up my little 10 gallon tank. I'd been trying to work out the details since mid-December, and upon firmly deciding to get a few platies for it, I was looking into what you guys though about my plant situation.

First off, I will note that the two local stores, have an incredibly limited variety of aquatic plants, and given this, I have about one option: Java ferns. This doesn't exactly play out poorly though, as this is what I was thinking ...
As I said, it's a 10 gallon platy tank. I've got fine gravel for the bottom, and a single (at this point I guess) medium size decoration to go in. I have an overflow filter (noted for CO2 loss) which should sit very close to the water surface. The lighting is a 13 watt fluorescent (the the best of my knowledge), and I have yet to test the water for pH and KH.
So, the idea was simply, to have about 3 or 4 (whichever seems to best fit) java ferns in the tank. What I was best trying to sort out, is how the should be rooted. I don't know how easy it would be to find driftwood to root them to, so I'm probably looking at larger rocks or decorations to try and fasten them to. The other issue I had was transportation. The tank will have to be moved (at least once) and I don't know if any water can be left in during the period. Would it be possible to put them in bags (still fixed to their objects) or should they stay in the tank?

Thanks in advance to anyone who lends a hand. More input when I test the water (though it's unlikely I'll have something unhospitable to a java fern ...).

its great to see that you are researching much before diving into a planted tank...

i just breezed thru what you wrote and these are the things i have to say...

- java ferns are basically simple plants to keep with very minimal requirments so i would say go for it :)

- try getting more lighting, go for the higher wattage fl. lighting :)

- attach the fern to wood or rock up to you :)

- yes you can move them in a bag as long as you keep the plant wet :) thats the only requirment :)

- you would only need a PH and KH test for testing co2 if you will increase your lighting and inject co2 into your tank :)

errr did i miss anything ? hope this helps

Alrighty, one reply is better than none >_>

I did a pH and KH test a little earler.
KH seems good sitting at about 90mg/L (I don't know what this is in ppm, sorry).
pH however, concerns me slightly. For a freshwater tank, the tapwater I'd be using comes in at a solid 8.0. I still need to fill the tank with water to know if the gravel is affecting it in any way. Honestly I'm more concerned about this level for the platys rather than the plants.

I checked on lighting, and without spending $30 just to get the holder for tube bulbs, I can up the current lighting in the tank by 13 watts more for a 26 watt total. Also, would a CO2 pump be preferable, or possibly necessary in this situation?

Guess that's all to add for now. Any comment is welcome and appreciated :)
