As i started working for my local lfs i decided to get a shrimp they had in there for a while as it was massive compared to my amanos bout 3 times the size and they are fully grown, its like quite similar to them apart from it has no marking or stripes and it has massive long arms with pincers, any1 got a clue what it is and is it ok with amanos as i DO NOT want to get rid as he just strutes about owning the joint ha, any ideas??/

Thanks James

Sounds like a Red Claw Shrimp (also know as Long Arm Shrimp or "Freshwater Prawn" or Macrobrachium dayanum for scientific name). They're predatory shrimp.

I've got a shrimp question also. Sorry to hijack, I have 2 shrimp with brown sort of stripes with two arms, but one pincer is smaller than the other. I'm just wondering how I should care for it Ie food and things. The name was something like kadaam? Any ideas?

Sorry again for hijacking

i carnt see it doing much to any of my fish as its pincers are small or would i be mistaken? and what about the amanos? thanks

will my fish be ok?

Maybe not. If the little ones start to disapear and the shrimp is looking increasing fat, then you know... Etc ;) . But eh, thats one of the risks you run when buying unidentified critters. Personally i've never kept these particular shrimp before, but i would be concerned about the small tetras safety as these shrimp do have the capability to kill and eat small fish.

iv'e looked and the shrimp you are talking about and its looks nothing like them it doesn't have the arch on its back. It just looks like a massive amano with long arms but without the markings. i believe my fish will be ok due to their size and its claws are very small. Even though the shrimp is massive.

Long armed shrimp tend to be predatory- this is why they have long arms. Peaceful scavenging/algae eating shrimp like amano shrimp have short arms and miniscule claws. Fan feeder shrimp are completely harmless and live off particles they catch in the water with their "fan hands".

Anyhoo, there are a few other novelty long armed shrimp it could be...For example Macrobrachium rosenbergii ("Giant River Prawn" or "Malysian Prawn" are common names). Macrobrachium Lar is another one. The name macrobrachium actually means "big arm."

Ok sorry again. It's a garnaal kamabon shrimp. Any ideas on why they eat, I fed them algae wafers and seemed to enjoy them, running across the bottom of the tank to eat it. I have tried googling but nothing came up for them. Wondering if anyone has any ideas
