Are there any people on this forum who are, or have been members of either a local A.S. or a national fishkeeping body.
If so please state which. Just to see how healthy the local and national societies are today.
If you are not already a member of such, would you consider joining one.
Regards
BigC

P.S. USA members please feel free to add you 2 cents worth as well.

I'm not though an LFS owner I know keeps wanting me to join some or start others. :p Seems to think I have a passion or energy for fish that is greatly overstated.

There're really aren't any clubs in this area. Actually there is one but it's not very active. They have a forum but generally there's no one on it. I just checked it out and there was one registered user and one guest (me, although I am a member of the forum but just wasn't logged in). There is a pretty active club in Raleigh but that's about 150 miles away.

Yeah! I just can't seem to get my head round the scale of some American states. 150mls is just a tad too far for to join. Is there no specialist clubs locally.

I'm a member of the Long Island Aquarium Society in Suffolk County NY:

And expect to be joining the Nassau County Aquarium Society next year,

It's a lot of fun meeting and talking fish with real live people, especially after spending so much time posting on the internet about them. :D

I know what you mean!

Actually, the Charlotte club is fairly active (their forum just isn't) but it is mainly SW members. My son (he'sa member on here too (chkltcow) and has 2 SW tanks) has been to a couple of their annual meeting/auctions. Not much at all around here for FW buffs. As for the size of the states, North Carolina is no where near being a big state (28th in square miles out of 50) but it's still would probably take 8 or 10 hours to drive from the far western side to the coast (about 600 miles). Raleigh is the capital so it's more central but still on the eastern side. For me to go to their meetings and that sort of thing, it would definitely be an all day affair. I do wish there was something close as it would be nice to meet other fishkeepers locally.

I'm not a member of any local clubs, though there are a few, mainly because I just dont have the time (4 young kids and University), but I am a member of the local forums, which many of the local club members are regular posters on anyways

I was a member and eventually secretary of my local club, my parents were among the founding members of the club. At one point we had over 100 members but over the years the membership just dropped away.

Our club was a member of the North East Federation (NEFAS) which had 12 member clubs all of which started to decline around the same time. Unfortunately all the clubs gradually wound up along with NEFAS a few years ago. There are a few clubs still going in Yorkshire and a couple in the Tyne and Wear area.

It is a sad fact but alot of people just want a tank that looks pretty but are not interested in finding out or knowing much about what they are keeping.
