Well, that was close! After getting a little jealous about hearing other people's successes I almost succumbed to getting 3xGuppies to prove that I too could get them to breed.

On the brink of buying them at my LFS, I suddenly realised of almost making the biggest mistake in my fish-keeping career.

Livebearers, fishes I won't touch!

My personal choice.

Have you been as strong in resisting buying 'that' fish you'd sworn never to buy? :)

I've got livebearers. I bought them because they were the first fish I ever owned, and I wanted to make sure I wasn't getting in over my head. Now I've got 4 fry, and I'm lucky to have only that many after I've had at least 5 clutches born.

I have a question about Kribs, though. I saw some at my LFS, and the female was protecting her fry with a fierce attitude unparalleled in the animal world. Have you had (m)any clutches of fry with kribs?

They're next on my list to attempt to breed. At the moment, I don't think my female is quite yet 'full' of eggs. The male looks keen. I suppose they'd breed when they're ready to.

Here's hoping. :)

I don't do livebearers either but not because I don't like them, I just prefer not to.

Kribs are very aggressive with their fry IME. My female has killed my male during their first time with fry and this is in a big tank.

I wouldn't do Live-bearers either, just because where would I put them... The only one and only one I would do is Endlers, there's a demand for them because they are rare. Now, If I could only find a female endler..

if i ever got live beaers agen my kribs would make them their dinner.

i used tomlike them, only becuz they gave me a thrill when i got fry, btu now i like cichlids cuz they give me a thrill just watching them

I have 'em because they were my first fishes and they multiplied like crazy!

Would I buy them again? No way... I liked Platies for their playful-ness but once you move on to other species (such as cichlids), interest dies down pretty quickly.

As an example, P Acei beats them hand-down in just about every ways. They are more interesting, looks better, gets larger and you can even hand-feed them! Of course, they are a little harder to keep but worth every effort at the end... ;)

yhbae.....I am replying to this not to comment on this thread (I have live beareres and love them) but to advise you not to put 3 clown loaches into a 30gall tank.....do you realise they get to a foot long each??

IMHO, your tank is allready pushing it in terms of stovking capacity and putting 3 loaches in there would be asking for trouble.

Same here.

When I first started, I was into tetras and livebearers, but now it's cichlids, bettas, and killies.

The only two livebearers that I like to keep are swordtails and guppies... I still keep them now and don't really find them that much of a bore. I also love bettas, rainbowfish and corydoras :D

I swore I'd never buy a betta but I saw a pretty one the other day and I think I'm going to end up getting it...oh dear :X

I've had a fancy strain of guppy called 'Blue Varietail' and lost 8 out of 9 in 2 months! Never buying them again. Anyway, I much prefer Corydoras to Livebearers. :)

this is the part where I would say something crazy like I normally would but I will say this that I do have live bearers and I am going to leave it at that.

Livebearers are great...well, thats blaket. the only ones I would buy are swordies cos I love them and maybe guppies. never mollies cos theyre ugly.

Probably a wrong discussion in this thread, but thanks for the concern... ;)

I do realize that, and a 80g is coming in the near future so I can afford to accomodate some species in these small tanks that you are not supposed to keep. I'm going to look for small clowns (under 2 inches) so they should be ok for a next while... ;) All of my other fishes in that tank are small as well - max 2 inches, so for now, bioload-wise it is ok. But you are right, at some point, I will need to re-plan that tank...
