For some reason my livebearers are dying

So far I have lost 2 guppys, 2 plattys and a swordtail

None of my other fish are effected

The fish are developing large white patches then dropping dead

Any ideas?

Ich perhaps? Do the white patches look like salt has been sprinkled on them and do they rub up against rocks/plants? xx

Need some more info.
Size of tank in gallons or litres.
How many fish and which type.
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
Where are the patches on the fish.
Do the patches look fluffy or bleached out.
Any redness in the patches like on the outside or centre of the patch.

Tank is 270 litres

Stocking

2 Kribensis Pelvicachromis pulcher
1 Gold Nugget Pleco (L18) Baryancistrus sp
5 Clown Loach Chromobotia macracanthus
2 Dwarf Gourami Colisa lalia
3 Bronze Cory Corydoras aeneus
2 Blue Ram Mikrogeophagus ramirezi
2 Golden Eye Cichlid Nannacara anomala
1 Dwarf suckermouth Otocinclus vittatus
23 Neon Tetra Paracheirodon innesi
10 White cloud mountain minnow Tanichthys albonubes
2 SwordTail Xiphophorus hellerii
1 Platy Xiphophorus maculatus

I'll do some tests tonight and post them - the water is fairly acid

Patches are near the tail and go from top to bottom of fish - not fluffy more bleached out

No redness

Wow alot of fish in there.
Need to look at your stats then.
Do you just run the one filter or two.
If there no flicking and rubbing against objects, I would treat tthe patches as bacterial.

Not that many - they are all pretty small :)

My filter is a 70litre sump filled with bio-balls

There is no flicking or rubbing and only the live bearers are affected at the moment

Livebearers not hardy at all these days.
Remove black carbon and get treating, also increase aeration in the tank as meds reduce 02 in the water.
Good luck.

Test results

ammonia 0
NO2 0
NO3 250
GH >16
KH 5
PH 6.4

Nitrates definitely to high

Wow thats a high nitrate reading.
One of your sponges wants cleaning in old tank water, don't touch them all, just squeece some muck off them in old tank water, and clean the filter impellor.
Some water changes to get the nitrate reading down.
Do you use a gravel vac.
Do you hoover under the ornaments in the tank.
Say in another two weeks squeeze another sponge slightly again in old tank water.

Yup insane nitrate reading - think I might get a new test kit and retry

No sponges in my tank - just a sump filled with ceramic rings and bio balls

Sorry.
Yes you did stay that in the thread, haven't got a clue with a sump then.
Ask in tropical chat.
Good luck.

Colunaris is your problem needs treating with vast daily water changes, and try adding a little salt to the tank this should help it heal

well got a new kit and my nitrates are off the scale :(

1/2 my neons have now disappeared

I am now going to try a 10-20% water change daily until I can get the readings down

I am nervous about adding salt to the tank as I have catfish
