I am thinking about putting some live plants in my Betta's 3 gallon tank; what do ya'll recommend? Something preferably easy, that I can get at the LFS/LPS.

Depends on what lighting (type of bulb and wattage) you have on the tank, substrate and if you will be doing any other fertilisers :).

It's a good thing you asked about the plants, as lfs' sell non-aquatics and plants that require very high light all the time.

Also, do you want something fast growing (good for the water conditions, will lower nitrate levels, but may need regular pruning) or something slow growing mainly to provide interest for the fish and improve aesthetics of the tank?

Here's my tank: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2752385

It's a 9 Fluorescent Lamp...whatever that means...I guess I should look on the actual lamp?

And it doesn't really matter, just again, something pretty easy to maintain. I don't mind pruning (if it's like pruning land plants).

I had some pretty good luck with a couple "betta bulbs" by Topfin. .... no idea what the plant was. Although my gf got the same ones and they never grew *shrugs*

Seems that anubias and java fern are some of the easiest plants you can get from what i've read and been told.

Check out this site, it was recommended in the planted tanks section and I found it helpful:

Probably going to order from there next week. They organize their plants by ease of care. ;)

i have amazon swords and egeria densa with my betta, another has wisteria and cabomba, both tanks mainly have only natural light

Java Moss Balls also will look amazing in a tank and your betta can rest on them  A cluster of them together look really nice aswell.

Cabomba, Elodia, Mossballs, Java moss, java ferns, I have an amazon sword doing just fine under 6 watts ( 5 gal tank ) All those will be fine for bettas.

Anubias and jave fern are easy, but grow very slowly in low light so they won't do much for the water quality. The faster they grow, the more fish waste they consume.

In my experience water wisteria (Hygrophila difformis) grows pretty fast even in low light. Same with Brazilian pennywort (Hydrocotyle leucocephala), even though it's listed as a high-light plant on some websites.
