Just wondering if anybobody else would like to see LFS stock real live foods instead of dried/frozen stuff as i have to travel 40 odd miles when I have run out of daphnia in the winter (in the summer I can get them from a local pond) AND it costs £1.80 for a 1 pint bag of the little devils.
I know it can be easy to breed some live foods in the warmer months ,But wouldn't it be nice if you could just stroll into the LFS and buy some?

BTW I haven't forgotten about all you arowana/oscar owners its just that my LFS and many other I have visited sell grubs and crickets live

Why don't you try raising some brine shrimp? t's so easy and very very very cheap! plus fish love them!

And also, you missed brine off the list... most lfs' i visit have live brine shrimp. Would love to see my local lfs supply blood worm alive and wriggling though.

[if u can get hold of frozen cubes, e.g daphnia, mosquito larvae, bloodworm etc etc... then why not defrost them before adding them 2 your tank, turn the filter up and the fish won't know if it's alive or dead!]

I'm quite lucky and a number of the shops I frequent stock live food 80% of the time. Bloodworm, Daphnia and Glassworm and some shrimpy stuff. 80p-£1 (depending on shop) per bag or £2 for 3 bags (or combo).

yeah i would i mainly buy live bloodworm for my fish over other live foods simply as that's what they like the most ans my LFS has them in stock alot along with daphina.

:good:

My lfs regularly has live daphnia and bloodworm. Quid a go. The fish go mad for them.

I don't buy live foods, I do grow microworms for my endlers and grindalworms for the other fish, I also have a brineshrimp hatcher that works fine with Waterlife de-capsulated brine shrimp eggs, but I can't be bothered to put it back in following a clean

If I dont feed the live foods for a week, then use them I can see a real difference in colour on most of my fish especially the endlers, they colour up much younger and with brighter colours if they are fed on microworm every day.

I only buy live food in winter as in spring and summer I get to harvest plenty of mosquito larva, daphnia, rat tailed maggots and bloodworms from my pond! It doesnt take too long to catch and the amount you get in a bag from the LFS is barely worth it! Although I have been going OTT with the live foods as I never realise how much I've caught until its in the tank!

Hi,

I work in Wrexham and I am sure the Aquatics department at Waterways Garden Centre sell live foods. (Has a fantastic Marine department aswell but that's besides the point!)

There is also decent FS in Mold (about 10 minutes away from Wrexham, just off the A483) that sells live foods. Can't think of the name of it at the moment though.

If you have no joy there then head for Chester and go to Grosvenor Garden Centre. Again, I am sure they sell live foods.

All of these are within 15 minutes of the centre of Wrexham

My LFS does sell live foods!

Bloodworm for example (which I buy) - 3 bags (about 2 meals per bag) for 89p... so that's about 6 meals of live food for 89p. It's pretty good! My Cory Catfish go really mad for it! So do my Puffers.

its 3op a bag here, daphnia blood worm and brine shrimp constantly avalable.

if you go on a thurs when most of the lfs round here get the new stock in they have loads of them

Hi Steve,

I know of all the LFS in my area and although you would think it , none of them sell live foods.
All of them sell frozen foods and R/O water but I haven't come accross live foods in any of them.

BTW my friends and I who keep fish wont touch Waterways as we have had very bad experiences with them,
the best fs in the area is Alisons Aquarium in Caegwrle nr Mold( is that the one you meant?)

Thanks any way, its nice to speak to someone local.

I 'm definatly moving house then, is Bradford nice this time of year?

I dont mean to sound snobby , but with the exception of one or two, the lfs round here are IMO very poor.

I prefer Artemia (brineshrimp) myself which is why i opted for the 'Other' option.

My LFS does sell a range of live foods, from daphnia and bloodworms, to brineshrimp :) and also at reasonable prices too:)
