So, I'm considering another order from franksaquarium, but don't want to pay $30+ dollars for shipping. In around a month I'll be flying into NYC for work, where Frank's is located. Does anyone know if you can take back live animals in a domestic U.S. flight as a carry-on? I've looked on the TSA website and it's no help.

Give them a call - though I suspect the answer would be a no.
Animals can be sent via air but I you need to arrange this before hand with the airline and they are stored in a pressurised hold.

They barely allow you to take on board deodorant and cans/ bottles of things. Could always just check them in under the plane that your traveling on?

In Australia two of the three major domestic airlines will allow you to take fish on the plane with your carry on luggage.

And interestingly enough, we are not allowed to take any liquids on board with us either, so obviously a bag or container with a fish in it, is not considered to be a liquid!?!?! Weird!

The best thing to do is to contact the airline you'll be using and ask them, it'll only take you a few minutes to find out the answer to your question! Jobs done!

Then you get to post your result, so nobody else needs to ring the same airline! :)

Oh true that is weird. I assume thats with qantas? Sorry for the hijack :S Having traveled a hell of a lot in the US. I very much doubt that they would let you on the plane with fish. Because they are a lot stricter then us when it comes to security and things. They have machines that haven't ever come to Australia weird. Anyway, sorry again for the hijack.

Qantas and Virgin allow you to have fish as part of your carry on luggage. Jetstar do not!

Yep Jetstar is crap, but it's very very cheap. With a family of 5, I can assure you we save money wherever we can!

I love how this thread was hijacked into an all Australian convo

I never flew in my life so I couldn't help you (the OP) so I'm sorry. I just had ot respond as I enjoyed the comments left

The last I heard fish were NOT allowed as carry-ons on American planes. (Although I certainly hope that there are exceptions!)

I also heard a rumor of somebody who tried to take their fish on a plane with them getting the bag confiscated and dumped, including fish, by airline personnel, but I have no idea how accurate that actually is.
