Hi
I was wondering if a little 3 inch oscar would be happy in a ten gallon tank. Also if so, would I be able to put two ,also tiny, silver dollars in there
thanks for all replies :shifty:

Hi there Ninja. :)

No, an Oscar wouldn't be happy in there. You probably have 1-2 more months before he outgrows that tank sizewise and about 2 weeks before he outgrows the filtration for it.

To give you an idea, I wouldn't put 1 full grown Oscar in anything less than a 75 gallon tank and, imo, he still wouldn't be happy.

The Silver Dollars you asked about get 6-8" and like to school. So I wouldn't get less than 6 of them which would also call for a 75g tank, imo.

It's great that you want to learn and care about the fish you purchase to ask, but I'll have to say a 10g tank for an Oscar is a deathtrap. He'll die of bad water conditions in there before he outgrows it, so please don't think that because he "fits" that he's ok for a while. He isn't. He needs to swim around and can't even now to be happy in a 10g. Not at 3".

Do you have any other tanks you could put him in?

If not, we can help you out on what to put in a 10g tank and you can turn the Oscar in to live a happy life. :) It's a win/win for both of you. :)

Please let us help you out if you want. :)

don't worry I havn't bought an oscar yet I was just wondering if I bought him if he'd be fine.

I don't have a larger aquarium so I guess i'll have to choose another type of fish.

My second choice would have to be some 1 inch lepard puffers (sorry i know its the chiclid section) at walmart but i'm worried about finding snails to help keep their teeth short.

Everybody feel free to suggest any type of fish that would do alright.

Thanks for the very helpful reply. :)

Oh ok. I thought you already had the Oscar.

I commend you then for asking about a fish before you bought it. Heck, when I started out, I bought the fish and THEN worried about it. That was terrible and I can't even tell you how bad I was for the fish!

No it's ok. :) I'll leave this thread here. It started asking about cichlids and if I were to move a thread it would only be to help the person asking, not because I cared they posted in the wrong place. :)

OTOH, if you want some advice about puffers, and I can't blame you at all as I want to get some too so I'm not the one that can help much, you might be best off starting a new thread in the Oddball forum.
You don't have to and everyone is welcome to answer your question here and I encourage them to do so, but I'm thinking I go into the livebearer section about once a month because it doesn't interest me and I'm thinking pufferpack, CFC and the others might not check in here if they don't like cichlids.

It's up to you tho if you want to go there and start another thread. I just care you get the help you need. This thread will remain here and open for you so if you want to keep it here and get your answers, just keep bumping it up from time to time then. It's all up to you. :)
