Hi all

After reading some posts here about the lily pipes im now thinking of getting maybe the inlet and outlet. Only thing is im not 100% sure which would fit with the filter i have.

I have the tetratec ex700 and i checked and the pipes running off the filter and they should be about 11.3mm so im guessing i need to go for this but it is just a guess.

Any help would be appreciated.

there is no need for them unless your tank is planted is it btw?

and there not a necessity but they do help with flow.

andy runs a ttex700 with lilies but cant remember what size. i think its 12mm

Lol i had a feeling you would reply first truckasauras123 :D

My tank is planted but not heavily. Like you seen in one of me other posts i plan on adding riccia and some sort of floating plant.

So would the tank have to be heavily planted for it to be worthwhile? I might need to get some pics easier to judge then.

Cheers

ok cool.
Andy where are you?? need your help!! :p

lilies are fine on any tank - they are aestheticaly pleasing plus they improve flow :)

You will need the 12mm set, if they do not fit then ip the ends in boiling water for a few seconds to make it more maluable.

You see them more on planted tanks because of Amano etc where they are after the aesthetics. However they are for any tank ;)

12mm for EX700

Cheers guys, your all very helpfull :D

A little off topic SuperColey1 is that a Strat your playing in your Avatar?

Out of interest, how do the lilly pipes improve the flow, and in comparison to what?
My filter came with a long spray bar (to go along the back of the tank), and also a lillypipe, (which I used to call a duckbill  ).
I started with the spraybar, but wanted more flow along the length of the tank, (which due to fitting I cant use the spraybar for), so started using the lilly pipe.
I have now removed the LillyPipe and just have the bare pipe exiting into the tank as this seems to give a much more focused water flow and therefore more circulation flow around the tank.
Just interested if perhaps I was using my lilly fitting wrongly if they are supposed to make the flow better? (I never really understood the point of them)

Thanks!

you can see pictures here: http://www.ukaps.org/higher-tech-tank.htm

Obviously they represent the theory so plant mass will make difference.

Nope never really like Strats (It's a bass) They are a bit too 'nice' sounding for me. I like a good clanky sound.

The bass in the pic is an Ibanez Blazer Custom. I bought several replacements including a lovely Warwick thumbass but always returned to the Ibanez. ;)

Thanks for the link, but as far as I can tell it just 'shows' a lilly pipe fitting, but doesn't say why this would be better or worse than just allowing the filter outlet pipe, elbowed to horizontal to just pump the water out that way. I still don't understand how a lilly on the outlet effects the flow in comparison to just having the naked outlet ?

Did you see that picture?

When i said flow i meant circulation. It is due to the unique shape of pipe that creates a circular vortex. If you have a "standard" pipe like you have then it is more focused and similar to a powerhead - it will blast it in one direction and it will not cover the whole tank area - somthing that a lily pipe gives you.

nice one aaronnorth, i was wondering about the theory behind this and what it actually did.
I think im pretty much sold on this. i will be buying one soon!! :D

One thing i would like to know what affect does this have on the fish when they're sleeping??

I know in the wild there would be water flow and all to contend with anyway but how do they do it?

SO the lillypipe should be fitted with the 'cupped' surface on the underside, and the open section facing upwards?
I'd always fitted mine the other way up, maybe thats why I never really saw an effect...
