after changing Rinkee's icky water today to nice clean water, i watched her for a moment. what does the queen do? comes right over and inspects her subject, with the eyes tilted forward and everything.

on a whim, i look at her from a different side of her bowl. she swims over and stares right at me. four times. from different angles. no mistakes.

o_O now, this is the thing i must show my dad. now he can try to say she's a dumb fish!

He should make no mistake, Bettas are super intelligent fishes. They realize what their spaces are, they realize that the human is theirs, and they know how to "communicate" with you... it's up to you to interpret what they say though.

Has anyone ever sat down and tried to figure out what different betta gestures and postures mean? I'm not looking for a developed "language" or anything, just someone's observations that happen to make sense.

I have not sat down and observed mine too much in terms of language, but...... I do know that when he sits at his feeding corner, not moving, he's begging for food.

I only feed from one corner of his tank where there's a little "feeding" hole. He knows this and has no qualms about sitting there and staring at me until I feed him. Or.... he'll see me go by and he stops whatever he was doing to swim to his feeding corner to beg.

When he flares, well... everyone knows what that means.

And I have an odd ball betta who's a tail chaser (like a dog) and when he does this for 5 minutes at a time, I'm thinking that means he's either very bored or he wishes he has a sparring partner :p

I have a female that likes me to sit by her bowl and just look at her and she likes me to touch her bowl so she can follow my finger. She'll stare back at me just all content that I'm there admiring her.

She's one of my oldest two, going on 2 1/2 years...She's my good ole gal. :)
