Hi All

Quick question I have just set up a 54l tank planted with 2 Agassizi Tefe and 6 Beckfordi pencil fish, whilst I am staying in belgium, I travel back to UK every weekend. My question is would it be better to turn the lights off every weekend or to keep them on?

I have a 15W bulb I think.

Any opinions most welcome.

Thanks
Dave

get a timer, you can pick them up from any supermarket, diy store etc for just a few pounds, you set it to come on/off at certain times of the day. we have all our lights running on them anyway so we know regardless of what we're doing they're always on and off at the right times :)

Thanks I also have a timer on my large tank but being in Belgium during the week I have to locate somewhere that sells them, only just added the fish this week so have not had a chance to go out and look for a timer, so was wondering what would be better for this weekend.

Thanks
Dave

ok if you can't put it on a timer it depends how much you love your plants

leave it on and the plants will be fine, you'll probably have a tank full of algae and it's not great for fish to have the light on all the time

leave it off you may get some die off in your plants but your fish will be fine.

if you really wanna keep the plants you can take them all out of the tank, put them in a bucket of water and leave it by a window where it will catch the sun, maybe add some liquid ferts to the water, then leave the lights off in the tank. bit of hassle though

Get extension cable with more outlets and hook up both lights from both tanks to timer.

Hmm that would be one long extension cable considering one tank in belgium and the other in UK :)

Thanks Miss Wiggle, I like the plants, most are hardy plants anyway, Java Fern, Moss, crypto's and Anubia's, only a few that might not be good but I can always replace. I prefer the fish and they cost more so i'd rather them be well and not stressed.

Thanks for the info

no problem :good:

that's always been my rationale too, i did the bucket thing when i went away for a week once and all my plants were fine though so it'd work for a weekend. i doubt a weekend without light would do too much to your plants anyway.
