Hello,

I've just wired up the lighting on my tank, (it didn't have a plug when I bought it) and it has 2 20w tubes - one is called flora-glo and the other is called marine-glo. the marine one gives off a blueish sort of light.

this leads me to beilive that this tank was probably used for marine before I bought it... :p

will it be okey to leave this sort of lighting in for a planted tropical tank (cardinals etc...)

if I do will there be any problems?

:)

the marine blue light is a deep penatrating light mainly used for showing off the ultra violet colours in corals and marine fish, this light can be used in a FW tank but more as a moonlight effect, if you choose to have it on it will show the blues/purples up a lot better tho, but it will not aid your plants growth at they use more of a green spectrum. so you could leave it as-is or (this is what i would do) change the bulb for a triplus bulb and then buy a cheap LED moonlight kit for about £10 off ebay, you will get better plant growth and some nice moon lights on your tank.

hope it helps :D

wow, I know what you mean about moonlight!

I came home the other night and I had left the lights on the tank on by mistake, and the blue light made it look amazing, when I was walking up the path all I could see was this blue glow coming from the front room!

I think it's going to stay for the mean time but I'll keep in mind I need to see how the plants are going to do.
