just a quick question, i've got a jewel 96 l tank with a 20 watt tube with reflector and i'm going to put in another 18 watt lamp tommorrow. Can someone just tell me what my watts per gallon will be? I'm led to believe this is only a very rough guide but i'm still curious to what i'll have !! Does it make much difference having a reflector and if so how much cos i don't think i could fit the new lamp with a reflector (haven't got room) but if its worth my while i'll do my hardest to fit one !!

cheers

Total wattage = 20+18 = 38

Total gallonage(approx in US gallons) = 96/4.5 = 21.33333 so approx 21 US gallons

Watts per gallon = total wattage of lights/total gallonage

= 38/21 = 1.8

This is without allowances for decor or loss of light. Lack of reflectors will reduce light hitting the water, thus will effect the actual WPG rating. Get a reflector in if you can, as it will increase the amount of light :good:

cheers for the quick reply so with the reflector that should equate to more than 1.8 w/g.......... any idea how much more though ? Has any of the clever people on here worked out a rough percentage ? I know it might seem a strange question but i've only been fishkeeping for a couple of months and i've got the bug now ( but i'm fed up of my plants dieing ) so i'm going to make a co2 injector tommorrow and would like to know what sort of plants might work out !!

A reflector wont increse WPG it jus reflects al the light output used from the other side back in the right direction.
If you are using DIY co2 then use 2 bottles as this will keep a steady production of co2, change 1 on a w/c then one mid-week. Fluctuating co2 will cause algae.

1 US gallon is 3.78 litres. You have done a rough conversion for imperial gallons.

so am i right in thinking your saying my w/g is =

96 / 3.78 = 25.39

38 / 25.39 = 1.49 watts / gallon

cheers

So it is

Sorry for misleading.

you got me all excited thinking my lighting was more powerful than it actually is !! So even though i've pretty much doubled what i had my lighting is still very low !! Never realised how low standard lighting was !!! Any ideas whether it would make much difference if i added a reflector to the new light ?

cheers
