Hi,
I read from a pinned topic that 5 on, 2 off, 5 on would be the best for the plants as this will limit algae growth. Anyone got good results with that interval?

Ignore that, if you're able, a midday burst of high light is now widely used. I.e. use 50% light for first 3hrs, then full 100% for mid 3hrs, then 50% for last 3hrs. But this does require at least two ballasts so it might not be possible.

If you cant do this, leave the lights on all day for around 8 to 10 hrs, don't bother with a midday 'off period' it don't stop algae, if that's what you were thinking. The lighting article is out of date :)

Adding to what Sam has said I would suggest you click on the photoperiod link in his signature.

The 'siesta' period is really only for poor CO2 tanks like DIY ones where it lets the CO2 build up during the siesta ready for the second burst of light.

This isn't really very natural so if your CO2 and circulation is good then I would stick to a straight 10-12 hours of light with the midday burst if possible.

I have a lot of low light plants in my current scape and am using the 4-2-4 suggested by the man in Sam's thread. Coupled with a good dosing regime it is working very well for me.
