lighting for plants and fish

Should i get lights for plants or the fish

I would definitely go with lighting for the plants. Although, a 50% actinic blue/ 50% sunlight would work for both fish and plants! I've used that type of bulb with my 20g tank with live plants and neon tetras and has really brought out the color of the fish and helped with the plants as well.

i'm not that much of a plant person but i'm trying something different in my tank

i think it only comes in one wattage. I didn't really pay that much attention when I bought mine but I only remember seeing one wattage choice

on a 12gallon tank you might need 30watts or more.
