Just use a timer, makes it so much easier, I run mine from 3pm - 11pm 8hrs, planted.

Exactly the same as me. Timers are well worth the couple of quid they cost and 8 hours works well for me.

i have no trouble with alge so do you think i should change the time or just leave it.

there is still so many people saying different times on here so i am abit confused at the moment.

drop to 8 hours, all it takes is an ammonia spike to give you an algal outbreak.

No need for an hour break half way through, especially not in a planted tank. One continuous 8 hour period is the best for plants.

I agree that 8 hours is plenty. As to when you set it, it depends when you are in the house. I'm in all the time, but I spend most time looking at the fish in the afternoon/evening, so my light comes on at 2pm and goes off at 10pm. When I set up my new tank in my bedroom, the light will be on later - probably going off about 11pm. You can buy timers from the supermarket for a few pounds - they are well worth it!
