Out of no where there is a whitish spot on my black balloon molly. It wasn't there this morning and it wasn't there early this afternoon but at around 4 I sat down to watch them and saw it. I am wondering if it's just a scale that has lifted up? I don't think a spot like this could just appear within a couple of hours if it was fungus?

I can't really get a good look at it as he's constantly swimming about. He was fine as can be when it wasn't there but now that it is he seems to be acting a little funny hanging near the bottom of the tank.

It sticks out a bit and looks a little fuzzy...

Where is the spot does it have a circle of red round the edges.

The spot is on his lower right side. Nope no red around the spot. It's just white in color. Maybe someone nipped him and the scale fell off? He is black..but if a scale fell off it would be white underneath?

edit: It isn't fuzzy like hairy like the typical fungus..

If you have no scaless fish add some salt or melafix to the tank to see how it goes, if the spot dosn't disappear in a few days you will need to use anti internal bacteria med, good luck.

I can't use salt as I got a bristlenose pleco in there :/

I'll keep my eye on it. I sure hope it's just a scale thats fallen off. I'd treat for bacterial not fungal? :dunno:

Leave it for a couple of days, its probably been in a run in with another fish or swam into something. It should start to heal soon.

I have had this on a couple of fish, if your water is clean the scales grow back very quickly.

Every once in a while my betta will have a scale that's sticking out that sends me into a panicked frenzy. Within a few days, the scale drops off.

I wouldn't worry as long as your fishy is acting normal otherwise.
Do keep an eye on it an dif it is that way for more than just a few days you might want to examine it closer.

Most medications labeled for tail and fin rot, cotton mouth, columnaris, pop eye, are antibacterial as well. True fungus is a lot rarer than than "fungus looking" bacterial infections.

I'd get him isolated and keep and eye on him asap just to be safe. Also if you isolate him then you'll be able to give him some salt. I'd have some antibiotics on hand just in case it starts to worsen.

Well he looks a little better today. I tried getting a better look but it's so hard because he's constantly moving. It looks like either the scale has already fallen off or it's about to fall off because I can see something sticking out.

He's his old self again today. Maybe he got caught somewhere so was acting a little funny yesterday because he was hurt and kinda scared.

My boyfriend is bringing some bacterial medication home tonight after work for my female bettas..so if it does turn out to be something I'll have some medication on hand.

I really think he's just injured himself somehow though...least I'm crossing my fingers (all of them) LOL :p

Guess it was just a scale falling off as the white spot is basically gone. Fewwww what a relief
