Is the lifespan of a fish lengthened or shortened when the fish breeds? In the case of rats and mice, the lifespan of males is shortened if they fail to breed. Is this true of fish?

I no it shortens guppys life span giving birth all the time.

Shouldn't effect males, it's just females that get the short end of the stick.

All my female malawis have died within weeks of having "young"....The males don't give a damn and move on to somefish else!! :/

I thought the lifespan of male rats is shortened rather than lengthened if they breed? That's the intuitive solution... if you don't breed, live longer so you have more of a chance to. Not having to produce as much sperm and maintain germ-line tissue gives the rest of the body more resources to work with as well, which is why spayed and neutered animals have longer lifespans.

which is why spayed and neutered animals have longer lifespans.

actually alot of small animal deaths like cats concerning spayed and nutered is also dependent on the fact that non-spayed/neutered pets alo go through heat, this drives them absolutely nuts and will do anything to escape the house and find a mate, the problem is that many people live on busy streets and these cats get hit by cars, going through heat can induce lots of stress on cats and that maybe why they dont live as long in this instance.

This reminds me of a conversation I had with my GP the other day. He told me about the remarkable fitness of his 101 year-old aunt, something he puts down to her being a maiden aunt. Question is, is it worth it?
