Hey does anyone know how long Betta's live? My best friend and her mother in law both had betta's that died when they were about 4, but they kept them in tall narrow vases with plants. They would do a 100% water change every two weeks.

I keep mine in a 5 gallon tank with a filter, heater and live plants. I also give him treats of frozen blood worms and brine shrimp along with his pellets. I do a 10%, and the occassional 20% water change every week. He's nearing 4 years old now and I'm starting to get worried that he is nearing the end of his life expectancy based on my friends fish.

I guess they live to be about 2-5 if they are happy and healthy. I think it just depends.

I heard of one making 8 years but I guess it all depends on the genetic health of the fish, ie. the stock he came from originally, plus the excellence of the care he's had all his life, and so on. It wouldn't surprise me to hear that different types of Bettas live to different ages, say veiltails vs. plakats. Anybody know about that?

Depending on the quality of care, species, breeding, and overall health, I have heard anywhere from 2-10, with 2-4 being average.

They say that bettas that are raised slowly from birth live longer -up to 5 years on average. Those that are beefed up on hormones to grow faster usually live much shorter lives averaging two years or so.

Wuv- I can no longer go into threads that you have posted on. That eyeball is driving me crazy, I just can't get past it. I keep looking at it while trying to read posts.... I am going insane..... or already have...... :fun:

Awww, that's unfortunate because I've been trying to get some pics of your orange boy's kiddos to show ya ^_^ Remember that whole incident before he left here?
They're just so darling!!

This has been my avvie for years :( I tried a different one for a while, change was good, but repetition is better :p

Awww I would love to see them. I'm not good with genetics, what colors and tail types did you get, or it to early to tell? Definitely message me when you get them, I would love to see him. He is an absolute doll, always hiding in the cutest places hehe!

there are so many factors that play a part in how long a bettas lives. genetics and care are teh big ones. on average you can expect a betta to live between 2-3 years of age, thats a full life for one of these fish. if i am correct, i belive the longest liveing betta lived to be 11 and belonged to a breeder in tialand. you may have to correct me, i read that story a while back -_-
