Today when I was at the LFS to buy fish, the employee was trying to help two people. (She was VERY knowledgable, and even had her own 120 gal). These people tell her they are looking for fish to add to a friends tank as a christmas gift, and they asked her recomendation. Her response: Get a gift card, seriously!

I was also really impressed with how she quizzed me with what I had in my tank before scookping me out my fish. She even said she wished they didn't sell some of the fish they had because they didn't sell tanks big enough for them.

Can we say AWESOME!!!! an employee at the local chain store that actually cares for fish.

Thats pretty amazing, when i was at a LFS chain a couple of days ago they sold a small normal pleco to a lady with a 10 gallon and the employee said it would do fine in it for its whole life in that tank?

Awesome! Don't ya love it when people actually care about their jobs?
Pretty much every employee at my LFS is like that. All but one have tanks of their own, and the new guy who doesn't know me yet is also a fish fanatic and kinda quizzes me whenever I buy something live. He actually knew what a darter was when they got one mixed in with their ghost shrimp the other day, I was rather impressed.

Good for her! It's nice to hear someone praise an lfs employee for a change. :D

That is great to hear of a LFS employee that cares about the fish and hobbyist. I have been going to my LFS for almost 20 years. I have been going to his store since the 1st week he opened. The owner has always been honest with his customers. Even to the point of losing a sale. Some people in the fish industry look at the long term rather than the quick $. Every newbie is a potential hobbyist. And a hobbyist can be your customer for many years.

Edit: I forgot to add. Please support your LFS. Chainstore petstores and online purchases are no substitute to good LFS advice and individual attention.

give that girl a medal!

i walked out of pets at home in a huff the other day after observing a grumpy employee fish out 2 baby fancy goldfish to a young family, no questions asked whatsoever.
yes the family may have been knowledgable, but on the other hand, they may have just been putting them in their new spongebob squarepants 4 gallon "suitable for 2 goldfish" tanks. BLEH.

It seems like just about everyone here has bad experiences with their LFS. Not me. My LFS is top notch. The fella that own it LOVES fish. He always asks about the size and contents of a tank before he sells a fish. He dosent sell dyed parrots, no betas in dixie cups, and if you wont be able to handle a fish -he'll suggest a diff one. He's really professional and his tanks are immaculate. The local grade school takes a trip to his store because its like a mini aquarium. This guy goes in person, every tuesday to New Jersey (like a 3 1/2 hour drive), to pick up his new stock for the week. Thus every fish sold in the store is hand selected by the owner.

After being on this forum for a while, I have realized how lucky we are up here in Albany NY.... Its nice to know that there are others out there who have positive experiences with their LFS

That is really good to here.

The owner has always been honest with his customers. Even to the point of losing a sale

The owner of my local reptile store is really good at losing sales. Last time I was in he got out a snake purposely to show me how much it bit.
