i was in pets at home at the weekend in Inverness, they had about six bala sharks all about 4 inches long in this tiny tank which was ( I would say, about 12 inches square) they had a couple of other fish in it too but I cant remember what they where.

One of the Balas was just about dead and its tail fin was covered in a white fungus type thing.

When I mentioned to the guy about them in the tank he said that they were being treated and they weren't for sale. I then was thinking that surely if there are sick, putting them in a tiny tank would only make the disease worse and add to the stress.

All the Balas were clambering up at the corner of the tank, I was quite shocked by it because usually they are very good with their fish. But the usual staff I have seen there haven't been in for a while and there is a different guy there now. :/

It doesn't surprise me. I hate the fact that pets at home are allowed to keep any pets. Our local one in Godalming has fish that are in awful condition. Half the lights don't work, algae covers the tanks, and there are far too many dead fish in them.

I just try and do my bit by not buying anything there.

They also keep birds, rabbits and other small rodents. The staff don't have a clue and I've heard them recommend a rabbit hutch that was far too small for the 2 rabbits they were about to sell. Makes me mad

Of course this is just one shop, but I used to spend a lot of time in a rabbit forum and Pets at home gets slated quite a bit.
