Ideal techniques for fish keeping.

  1. Add gravel, sand, whatever to the base of the tank. Fill with tap water, and some dechlorinator.
Add filter, and aeration (bubble stone necessary).
Add ammonia each day, until significant drop in level.
Check for nitrate, and then do a 40% water change.
Put dechlorinator into the tap water about to be put into the tank.
    Check ammonia and nitrate.
Keep on doing this until ammonia and nitrate drop to zero.
    Add fish.
    Enjoy.
Also, if you add plants, don't they help in getting rid of ammonia and nitrate. So you add them after you get beneficial bacteria on your filter.

Ideal items for fish keeping.
  • Tank, thermometer, fish net.
  • Sand or gravel
  • Biowheel filter and replacable filters
  • Air pump, Air hose, and Air Stone
  • Plants
  • Plant fertalizer (droplets)
  • Ammonia, dechlorinator, ich fish med
  • Possibly other fish med
  • breading box, seperation tank
  • Light and heater
  • Fish and snails or shrimp
  • A pleco of course.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

Seriously? Loads of blanket generalisations and errors + I don't see the point you are trying to make. This is definitely not that helpful as a starter article to read if you are new to fishkeeping if that's what you intended. Needs much more detail. Sorry

:good:

No, it's not a guide. I want to know if I have the process down right.

aeration (bubble stone necessary).

Not nessecary, the filter should aerate the water enough. Air pumps are mainly for aesthetic pleasure.

Also, if you add plants, don't they help in getting rid of ammonia and nitrate. So you add them after you get beneficial bacteria on your filter.
You can add them whenever you want, makes no difference.

[*]Biowheel filter and replacable filters

Doesn't need to have a biowheel, could be internal, HOB, external...

[*]Air pump, Air hose, and Air Stone
See above, not absolutely nessecary, although handy to have spare.

[*]Plants
[*]Plant fertalizer (droplets)
Optional option, you don't have to have plants.

[*]breading box, seperation tank
The first is unnessecary, it's bad for the fish. Second is optional but it's helpful to have.

[*]Fish and snails or shrimp
Optional.

[*]A pleco of course.
Totally unnessecary, unless you want one for looks. You are the one who should remove algae, plus plecs are very messy and many are very large.

Alright. But the setup I want. Biowheel and airstone. Will the airstone create a nice current?

Vynilman: I have read the pinned topics, and there are still some stuff I don't understand. So I posted a summary of all that I know about cycling and items.
