Lee's Skimmer For A Nano Tank?

Are these total junk? I'm just wondering if I should buy one of these, try to make my own, or spend the big bucks on a good one. My tank is a 30 gallon tall. I'm a newbie to saltwater and it will probably be fish only for a while.

The answer all depends on what your 'DIY' skills are, your budget/wallet and your dedication to your tank. A 30G, IMO, would benefit from a skimmer as this is on the outskirts of nano size. What you can do is look up CPR BakPaks and AquaC skimmers and check out their prices and do some research. SH

Agreed, making a functioning protein skimmer is not for the feint of heart... Also, make sure you check out Ebay for some better prices on skimmers used or new.

Would a venturi style be a better choice in the long run considering the wood airstones require frequent replacement? Are the venturi skimmers noisy?

Venturi style are better for sure and are not noisy. Way easier to maintain once its setup
